FANTASY (2026)

for bass clarinet, violin, cello, and piano · ca. 5 minutes
Instrumentation: Bass Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Piano

PROGRAM NOTE

Fantasy, for bass clarinet, violin, cello, and piano, was originally inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem A Walk, though the connection loosened as I wrote, until the piece had mostly wandered off on its own. What crept in instead was simply whatever I’d been listening to lately.

The work unfolds across three continuous sections: the first runs largely on triplets, with stepwise motion imitating a walk, alongside repeating-note gestures and lyric lines. The second section turns lighter, embracing a more humorous and ironic character. The third gathers momentum and speed, almost like setting out to sail, driving forward until it concludes with all four instruments united and the opening walk motif returning in full.
